This week, I wanted to return to an old topic with a new perspective. France24 is a French state owned news company that covers global issues. Looking at their American section, I saw they did an article on the Martha's Vineyard scandal that has been ongoing, and decided to take a look as I have already analyzed the perspective of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. I already noticed some stark and obscure differences between the two. As mentioned in my first blog, there exists a Canadian anxiety to be fundamentally anti American on at least the cultural front. Because of this, the CBC tends to take a stance of the United State's affairs while France tends to remain impartial. The CBC article on the topic used specific language to inflict an emotion upon the audience to persuade it empathize with the migrants; "coward" to describe Governor Ron DeSantis and "political pawns" to describe the migrants.
The French article looks nothing like the Canadian one in that it doesn't talk about the opinions of unrelated politicians or political pundits, just the objective facts about the lawsuit involved in the aftermath. The article is also notably much shorter than the CBC article, as the CBC article uses an interview of Democratic Representative Dylan Fernandez to paint a vivid picture of their perspective. The France24 article is not as concerned with painting a narrative, so they kept their article short and to the point. France is a country that does not share any animosity with the United States in and cultural or economic capacity. We have been allies and known to help each other out, especially in regards to 1812 and World War II, but France doesn't have much of a strong economic or cultural investment with the US like Canada does. I tend to gravitate towards France24 for the most (in my opinion) unbiased (whatever that means in practice) coverage of important issues happening in my country.
Signing off,

Jake,
ReplyDeleteI think that it is interesting to look at the different ways different countries report on American issues. Both Canada and France are considered allies of the United States. I like that you mentioned that Canada makes an effort to not seem pro-America. I think that this effort by Canada becomes very clear in the article you mentioned. France's article is not as worried about seeming pro or against America. I think that this allows for France24 to report more factually. I agree with you that France24 is a less biased news source on this issue.
